Water for Kenya 2012
In Spring 2012, the College of Charleston Hospitality and Tourism Management department will be sending a team to Kenya in partnership with Water Missions International to a community in need of water. The team is currently working to raise the necessary funds (including planning the 4th A Global Affair: Gala and Silent Auction) to send a water purification system and a team to Kenya.
Did you know that:
- 884 million lack access to safe water
- 2.5 billion people lack adequate sanitation
- Diseases from unsafe water and lack of basic sanitation kill more people every year than all forms of violence, including war.
- 90% of the 30,000 deaths that occur every week from unsafe water and unhygienic living conditions are of children under five years old.
- The UN predicts that one tenth of the global disease burden can be prevented simply by improving water supply and sanitation
- Overall economic loss due to lack of safe water and sanitation is $28 billion, or about 5% of GDP
